The new rankings for both men’s and women’s tennis are out and the Serbians are moving up!

In WTA, Serena, by successfully defending her Wimbledon crown (not that the outcome would have an effect on the rankings this week), maintains her number 1 ranking.  2009 Wimbledon finalist Venus Williams slides down to number 4 when she reached just the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year.  Jelena Jankovic improves her showing at the Wimbledon by 1 round which boosted her rankings by one as well, up to number 2 in the world.  Serena is all alone at the top, her points far from Jankovic (~2500 points) while 2, 3 and 4 (Jelena, Caroline Wozniacki and Venus) are separated by merely hundreds of points.

Roger Federer is out of the top 2 spot for the first time in almost 7 years by virtue of his quarterfinal loss.  It is also the first time in 7 years that he is not in the Wimbledon final!  Rafael Nadal cements himself in number 1 by winning the French and the Wimbledon back-to-back especially since he lost early in the French and did not play in Wimbledon last year.  Roger lost a lot of points by not successfully defending both the French and Wimbledon, losing in the quarterfinals in both slams.  Novak Djokovic climbs up to number 2, edging Federer by just 20 points!

Great post! I did not know that Federer dropped out of the top 2 spot taht’s very interesting. With regards to Wimbledon, I thought that this year’s wimbledon was very exciting and was happy to see Rafael Nadal take home his second title. But you have wonder if his injuries are going to catch up to him. I’m worried for how his career is going to pan out because of the injury problems considering it could be an unbelievable career rather than just very good. Also, you think you could check out my blog? I really want to know what your opinion is on my thoughts. http://chrisross91.wordpress.com/2010/07/05/nadals-last-chance/
