‘an honest rendition of a liar’ – Cat Deeley on a nappytabs routine

The husband and wife team of Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo or Nappytabs choreographed some fo the best (hiphop) routines in So You Think You Can Dance.  They introduced, at least to me a new genre called lyrical hiphop where more than just dancing, the performers also tell a story.

These are some of the Nappytabs routine that left an impression among us fans of SYTYCD.  I think they made their lasting impact with their routine featuring Mark Kanemura and Chelsea Hightower, two of my favorite dancers.  Mark is a contemporary/jazz dancer while Chelsea is a ballroom dancer. This is ‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis.

It never fails to give me goosebumps.  Chelsea and Mark are so amazing in this routine!  The dancing and performance were superb!  This routine got nominated for an Emmy, that’s how brilliant it is!

Another favorite is the Season 4 opener with Katee Shean and Joshua Allen.  Katee, a contemporary dancer and Joshua, a hiphop dancer, are the top male and female dancers of the season although Katee only placed 3rd overall.  This is ‘No Air’ by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown.

I just love Katee and Joshua. I think Season 4 is the best season so far.  There were so many good routines in that season – hometown glory by Katee and Joshua, Will and Jessica’s Eden routine by Tyce, Twitch and Katee’s Door routine, Twitch and Kherington’s bed routine, Mark and Courtney’s the garden and of course bleeding love.

Season 5 winner Jeanine Mason and Philippe Chbeeb’s ‘Mad’ by Ne yo is also one of the better Nappytabs routines.

Season 6 winner Russel Ferguson and finalist Kathryn Mccormick also did a Nappytabs hiphop.  This wasn’t lyrical but entertaining still.  ‘I Can Transform Ya’ by Chris Brown.

Perhaps, a more memorable Nappytabs choreography in Season 6 is that by Jakob Karr and Ashleigh Di Lello to ‘Watcha Say’ by Jason Derulo.  Ashleigh, a ballroom dancer and Jakob, a contemporary dancer, were amazing in this routine.

In the ongoing season of SYTYCD, there are two hiphop routines so far that stand out.  One is a slow, lyrical hiphp danced by All Star Comfort Fedoke and season 7 top 4 Adechike Torbert.  Comfort is a hiphop dancer from Season 4 and Adechike, who is a contender as America’s favorite dancer this season, is a contemporary dancer.  The music is ‘Fallin’ by Alicia Keys.

This routine is the most dramatic I think out of all the Nappytabs routine.  The presence of a true blue hiphopper makes it all the more fantastic.  It was described by Cat Deeley as ‘an honest rendition of a liar.’

The other routine choreographed to Lil Jon’s “Outta Your Mind’ features Alex Wong, arguably the best dancer this season and All Star Twitch Boss form season 4.  This routine, for me, is the best that Nappytabs has created so far.  Too bad Alex got injured.  He would have been in the finals for sure.  The good thing is, he is allowed to go back as a contestant for the next season.  This isn’t lyrical hiphop but showcased phenomenal dancing.

I know there’ll be more amazing routines from Nappytabs in the future and I can’t wait to see them all.  By the way,, Nappytabs also choreographed the special routine to Flo Rida’s ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ for the National Dance Day last July 31 in the US.
