SYTYCD – top 20 perform… again

So the top 20 is still intact.  Thanks to an unusual decision by the judges last week.  Unfortunately, however, 2 couples are going home this week.  I hope America gets it right.

Debbie Reynolds is this week’s guest judge.  I remember her as Grace’s mother in Will and Grace, where last week’s guest judge Megan Mullaly starred in as Karen, Grace’s best friend and assistant.

Last week, each of the top 20 had 8 seconds to share something about themselves.  This week, each one revealed something unusual about their partners.

  1. Ryan’s leg hair grows really fast and Ricky is short for Roderick.  They had jazz choreographed by Mandy Moore.  The judges were satisfied with their performance.  They were both sharp and were really into their characters.  Ricky’s triple pirouette into a toe-touch was really cool, so smoothly done.
  2. Caitlynn has a favorite pair of boots, which turns her feet into a nasty blue color and Mitchell likes to wear his zebra print snuggy.  They danced a contemporary routine by Stacey Tookey.  It’s the first time for Caitlynn and Mitchell to dance as a couple since Mitchell had to sit it out last week due to an injury.  Stacey’s choreography was very creative involving two chairs.  The lines of these two dancers are really amazing.  And the routine features one of my favorite artists – Adele (Turning Tables).
  3. Wadi used ladies’ hair removal cream to remove his chest hair and Missy has an intermittent, discontinuous laugh.  They had cha-cha by Jean Marc Genereaux.  Wadi’s chacha was awkward and according to Mary respectable but not good enough but Missy was on fire, with good rhythm and feet placement.  Debbie wanted to bring Wadi home.
  4. Iveta talks to herself when she looks in the mirror (“You are a sexy beast!”) and Nick always wears shorts for ALL rehearsals – jazz, ballroom, bollywood even with his chicken legs.  They had bollywood with Nakul Dev Mahajan.  The judges enjoyed it but I personally felt they fell short.  They could have done it more elegantly and with more energy and precision.  And I wonder how tall Nick is cause he really looked long and lanky in the routine.  It felt like his height became a disadvantage in their dance.  Maybe it was the costume?
  5. Robert thinks he is a pro-wrestler and Miranda has a crush on Tadd.  They had hip-hop by Nappy-Tabs and had to be woodpeckers.  Miranda was hitting it hard, so hard in fact that she almost fell flat on her face on her front flip.  Nigel, though appreciated her energy and swag dubbing her as the best hip-hopper among the contemporary dancers.  I didn’t like the routine that much, though.  I found it a bit awkward.  Robert and Miranda’s performance, I felt, was not as sharp as the routine warranted.  And then Debbie Reynolds mimicked a woodpecker!  Now that was amazing.
  6. Clarice sleeps with her eyes open and Jess draws a stick figure orchestra.  They had contemporary by Stacey Tookie where they had to be royalties.  Clarice’s lines were absolutely amazing and though the judges were praising Jess, I think that his lines are below par owing to his seemingly poor flexibility.  His center is a totally different story because he can really nail those pirouettes.
  7. Jordan isn’t the brightest crayon in the box (she thought there really was a SYTYCD airlines! HILARIOUS!) and Tadd is obsessive-compulsive.  They had Viennese waltz by Jean Marc Genereaux and learned a lot about ‘space’.  They were both amazing – Tadd producing some flowing arm extensions complete with the up and down movement of the Viennese waltz and Jordan produced some of the most extended extensions ever.  They were, for me, one of the best couples of the night and they reminded Debbie of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse.
  8. Melanie doesn’t want her ears touched and Marko loves romance novels.  They had jazz with Mandy Moore using hats as props.  They were sharp and synchronized.  Melanie was very charming and cute with her hat on.  Marko dropped his hat a few counts before he had to catch Melanie while she jumped into a front split in the air.  Thankfully he got the hat back in time.  They were amazing!  They were stars!  They are stars!
  9. Sasha sweats like a dude and Alexander loves to look at himself in a mirror.  They had hip-hop by Nappy-Tabs.  The routine was about a soldier coming home to his wife.  Sasha was a revelation, hitting the beats sharply and precisely but still maintaining the smoothness and flow of the dance.  Alexander was equally great – that headstand on Sasha’s back was really athletic, but I barely noticed him because of Sasha’s brilliance.  It also helped that the choreography of Nappy-Tabs was incredible!  The first few bars alone were enough to make you fall in love with the piece.  I was actually wondering why the judges didn’t give it a standing ovation (though both ladies were teary-eyed at the end).  Maybe because Sasha and Alexander really made the routine seem very simple and easy.
  10. Chris puts on his creepy smile when he is nervous and Ashley thinks she has swag even if she doesn’t.  They had broadway by Spencer Liff.  The choreography was amazing especially since it involved prison bars.  Chris was strong and athletic and sharp and technical as well.  Ashley was sexy and provocative.

So my top 3 couples are Sasha and Alexander, Marko and Melanie and Tadd and Jordan.  My bottom 4 (I can’t bring it down to 3) includes Wadi and Missy, Iveta and Nick, Robert and Miranda and Jess and Clarice.

  1. […] This week’s performances were mostly amazing.  The bottom 4 for me, since I couldn’t decide on just 3 includes Wadi and Missy, Iveta and Nick, Robert and Miranda and Jess and Clarice.  But America has decided on the following as their bottom 3: […]

  2. What you said was actually very reasonable. However, what
about this? what if you added a little content? I mean, I don’t
wish to tell you how to run your blog, however what if you added a
post title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean SYTYCD – top
20 perform again dattebayo is a little boring. You ought to look at
Yahoo’s home page and note how they write article headlines to get
viewers to click. You might add a video or a picture or two to get
readers excited about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it
could make your blog a little bit more interesting.

  3. Wonderful blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo
News. Do you have any suggestions on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Appreciate it

  4. What’s up, this weekend is fastidious in support of me, as this occasion i am reading this fantastic informative piece of writing here at my home.
