It was a shocking Wimbledon this year so far, to say the least.  The first day alone brought out a lot of ‘Oh my God’s’ as reaction to Nadal’s first round elimination courtesy of a relatively unknown player ranked past 100.  The second round was even more outrageous as seven former world number ones got eliminated – Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Viktoria Azarenka, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Lleyton Hewitt.  Each day, a number of seeded players fall until only but a few remained standing to face the second week in SW 19. Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radswanka, Li Na, Petra Kvitova, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin Del Potro were able to avoid the plague that seemed to befall the top seeds.  But not for long.

Serena faltered against Sabine Lisicki in the round of 16. Agnieszka prevailed against Li Na in their quarterfinal match while Kvitova wasn’t able to vanquish the momentum of Kirsten Flipkens.  Only four women now remain – Lisicki vs Radswanka and Bartoli vs Flipkens.

On the men’s side, Novak remains standing in the last four, his 13th consecutive appearance in a grand slam semifinals.  Del Potro beat fourth seed Ferrer and Jerzy Janowicz awaits the winner between Andy and Fernando Verdasco.

Just four more days til the end of Wimbledon 2013.  Surely, there will be a new women’s champion and she is a grand slam virgin. Djokovic is the only Wimbledon champion left so he’s outnumbered.  But Del Potro and Murray have both hoisted a US Open trophy.

Tomorrow is another day and with what has happened so far, nothing is certain. All we can do is wait and witness the story unfold.
